Difference between authentic Muay Thai and imitations
If you are searching the web for information on Muay Thai training you will notice that many gym throughout the world list the word "authentic" attached the the title of their Muay Thai classes. What does this mean? Well, with the commercialization of martial arts in the 20th and 21st century many martial arts schools and health clubs offer cardio kickboxing classes or standard kickboxing classes and call it Muay Thai.

Authentic Muay Thai usually describes to primary aspects:
First, real Muay Thai refers to 8 points of striking: punches, kicks, knees, and elbows. Kickboxing as seen in the world famous K-1 organization uses 6 points of striking: punches, kicks, and knees. Boxing refers to 2 points of striking, involvling only punches. In Cardio kickboxing classes you hit a punching bag for about and hour, with the primary goal being fitness and little to no technical instruction.
Secondly, Authentic Muay Thai training sessions have a specific format based on Thai boxing camps in Thailand. In thailand their training sessions are often 3 hours long. Each session is broken up into segments such as running, weight training, skipping rope, shadow boxing, footwork, bag work, pad work, clinching, and sparring. At Orange County Jiu-Jitsu our training sessions are a 1 hour long and involve many of the same segments as camps in Thailand. Outside of Thailand many gym which offer Muay Thai classes have students spend a majority of the time hitting a bag or doing partner drills, where each partner take turns hitting striking, while the other holds the palms of their gloves out like pads, mimicking pad training. This is incorrect. A significant amount of time needs to be spent doing multiple rounds of pad work, with an experienced pad holder, who is actually holding Thai pads. At Orange County Jiu-Jitsu & MMA we spend a great deal of time doing pad work, because this is what develops fast, powerful and picture-perfect strikes.
